Translation of Petition.
The humble petition of Tang Yu Cheung, Tang Pok
Tsun, Tang Tak Shin, Tang Lai Pan, Tang Shing Kei, Tang Yuk Wing, Tang Pak Kau, and others of Kam Tin,
in the matter of their prayer for the restoration
of their Iron Gates as a memorial,
Your humble petitioners were but ignorant country folk,
not knowing the height of Heaven or the depth of Earth, and
so when the Imperial soldiers first entered their village, the only thought of old and young was to flee to a distance, without thought of welcoming the troops, with the result
that the troops then removed the Iron Gates of Tai Hon Wai
and Kat Hing Wai,
Now your petitioners have already been subject to your
rule for over twenty years, during which they have lived in
peace and prosperity, so that even the fowls and the doga
are not afraid, Their enjoyment of this peace and prosperity is entirely due to the paternal care of Government towards
them.
Your petitioners therefore venture to unite and pray you, the District Officer, of your kindness, to present this petition, begging for the return of the two Iron Gates to
your petitioners, to be held by them for one thousand years
in remembrance, for which favour they will be grateful
through ten thousand generations,
Your petitioners samnestly entreat for the favour of
your approval.
